Whether you are exploring the world of criminal justice or are looking for the best in in-service training, the Emergency Services Institute can provide what you need.
The School of Emergency Services conducts Law Enforcement and Corrections Academies starting at various times throughout the year. These academies train prospective and sponsored recruits to assume positions as police officers and corrections officers. We work with local law enforcement and corrections agencies to help place our police and corrections recruits in jobs throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties.
In addition to the law enforcement and corrections academies, the School of Emergency Services also conducts in-service training programs for law enforcement and corrections personnel who are active in the field and want to upgrade their knowledge, skills and abilities. Courses range from advanced courses in drug enforcement, patrol activities, firearms and defensive tactics, intoxilyzer operator and inspector, Field Training Officer, RADAR and speed measurement, traffic crash investigation, and a full compliment of mandatory retraining courses. Our advanced and specialized training courses also includes instructor-level certification courses so that agencies can conduct their own in-house training.
Matter of Life & Death 2012:
Suicide Prevention Conference
Daytona State College June 7th & 8th
News-Journal Center, Daytona Beach, Florida
Overview - Deaths by suicide are the third leading cause of death in 15- to 24-year olds and the second leading cause of death among college students. Although there is a general acknowledgement that it is a major problem, many lack a specific suicide prevention initiative on their campuses or in their organizations to help combat the problem. Fortunately, many of the keys to preventing suicides are found in strategies that raise awareness concerning suicide prevention, normalize discussions surrounding mental health issues, and reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. There are some practical steps that can be taken to implement these types of strategies and help reduce the risk of suicide among various risk groups.
Conference Host - Daytona State College working together with Seminole State College and the University of Central Florida (Daytona Campus) under a Garrett Lee Smith College Campus Suicide Prevention Grant developed Project SPEAK (Suicide Prevention Education And Knowledge). Project SPEAK will be hosting “A Matter of Life & Death 2012: 3rd Annual Conference on Suicide Prevention” which will focus on suicide prevention for Florida colleges, universities, schools and other organizations.
Educational Objective - The educational objective of the conference is to highlight the significance of the issue of suicide prevention, especially on school/college campuses. We will provide practical approaches to help develop specific strategies to help combat suicides. Information provided will also benefit any organization which deals with young people and high risk groups. It is our intent to provide walk away strategies which are customizable and implementable to meet the needs of individual schools and organizations.
Additional Themes - According to a recent report in the NY Times in 2009, we lost more soldiers to suicide than to the Iraq & Afghanistan Wars combined. Therefore, to better assist our returning war veterans, we will be including an additional theme to our conference this year which includes dealing with issues specific to our Veteran population. Topics addressing issues facing our veterans will be incorporated to help better equip our campuses and organizations to serve the men and women returning home.
Research indicates that more than twice as many people with diagnosable mental health problems will see a member of the clergy rather than a psychotherapist. Therefore, Project SPEAK is integrating its successful “Life is Precious Suicide Prevention Series” into this year’s conference. We are adding this additional track for the Faith Community to help better equip them to assist people who may be suicidal.
