WISE programs return to Daytona State, Sept. 14

DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Aug. 25, 2010) – Returning after a summer break, the Daytona State College Foundation announces the first of its series of special workshops for seniors in our community. Wisdom In Senior Education (W.I.S.E.) is a program that promotes and shares the academic college resources with seniors, providing learning opportunities in an enjoyable format.

WISE flyerJoin the Foundation for, “The Art of the Highwaymen,” Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 2 to 3:30 p.m., as Florida artist, Mary Ann Carroll, demonstrates her painting techniques. The Highwaymen was an association of young African-American artists who painted their way from the Florida citrus fields in the 1950s through the 60s and 70s, by painting Florida landscapes in a flamboyant style. Carroll is the only woman among the original Highwaymen painters. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided.

Thursday, Sept. 23, 2 – 3:30 p.m. - “Vedic Math for the Mathematically Astute and Mathematically Stumped,” presented by Rick Blum.

Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2 – 3:30 p.m. - “Notes from a Coastal Columnist,” presented by Mark Lane.

All presentations take place in building 1200, on the Daytona Beach Campus at 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd.

W.I.S.E. programs are designed with senior citizens in mind and include topics such as Photography, Culinary Arts, Social/Political, Humanities, Theater Arts, Foreign Policy, Today’s Economics, Criminal Justice, County Government, Philosophy, Development of Florida after World War II, Florida Art and Artist, and Cracker Culture in Florida History.
